Don't know what you are going to see in Nottingham, Glasgow, Manchester or Birmingham. They are good for overnight stay though. Hotels in those big cities are not expensive and whide choice.
It will be Edinburgh Festival at that time. Hotels might be very expensive there. You can either stay there to enjoy the atmosphere or go on a three or four days tour to Highlands.
After condensing the days in those places, you might find you got more days around London in the end. Go to explore SE England, such as Brighton, Canturbury, Dover or Southampton. Lots of places to see in those places and easy to get to.
