It depends on which city you are in. But in general, Independence Day is THE day in a whole year you can feel the American spirit most. People will dress up all kinds of funny stuff they consider American. And everyone will be extra funny and friendly. Just be careful of the usual hot weather and crowds.
In Washinton DC, there will be a huge Independence Day parade in the morning, and free concert+ firework in the night. It will be really awesome, but be sure you go there at least 3 hours ahead to find a good location. People bring picnic blankets and food to enjoy the time before the firework. A great place will be just in front of the Lincoln Monument. The reflecting pool will make the fireworks evey prettier.

In New York, the famous department store Macy's will hold parade and firework as well. And in Boston, there are parade, concert and firework near Charles River. You can find some place on the grass near MIT main building.
